Design and features
The Safy Anti-theft travel bag is a carry bag with a sharp appearance. The room was very clean and comfortable. Mine came with the black leather face, but they offer a number of different styles and colors (including custom covers — more on that after). Here is a profile before.
Side view below. Sounds deceptively simple, right?
But flip it over and you’ll see that it’s actually a hard cover made from an ABS and polycarbonate material that offers impact and puncture resistance. This is a small tank of a cover.
You will also notice that there are no zippers or seams in which wandering fingers can make their way. The only way to get into the bag is through a combination lock that you place on top of the bag.
Spin the wheels, press the button, and this is the only way to get to the goods. Look at the beefy frame on the suction cup. It’s like a travel safe!
The bag opens like a flap. Check out those hooks on the front side that prevent someone from opening it. Coupled with a rubber seal that seals the perimeter, you also get IP44 water resistance. It will keep your belongings dry, even if you venture to the beach or pool.
And look at the internal hinges! Someone is also not going to open them. Safy has clearly thought about how to make this bag as safe as possible from all angles.
You might think that an errant thief might detach the bag at the straps — but no, my friend. They are inlaid with steel wires. And here’s another really smart element: the attachment points are heavy plastic “keys” that fit into slots on the sides of the cover. Once locked, they can only be released from the tabs inside the bag.
That means you can fix this bag on a park bench, beach chair, picnic table, train seat — and it’s not going anywhere until you unlock the bag. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Maybe someone could break the strap with a pair of bolt cutters, but you would see it coming.
You have two storage areas in the cover for your belongings. On the back side is a chamber approximately 7.25″ by 4.25″ by 1″ deep. An expandable pocket keeps your large items in place when you open the bag. I have my travel wallet, field notes and headphones here with plenty of room for my iPhone. I doubtful that a smaller e-reader might fit in.
The pockets on the front side are for your quick access belongings. There is a money pocket with a magnetic clasp, two ID and credit card pockets, and a document pocket for your passport, boarding passes, etc. These pockets are also RFID protected. This back pocket also expands a bit if you have extra documents.
So how does the Safy Anti-theft travel bag work in practice? Pretty awesome, actually! I’ve used it for traveling, and the top-opening design is great for quick access to important things without your stuff spreading. We locked him up on a poolside lounge chair where he kept 2 iPhones, my keys, wallet, matching cards and cash (for drinks at the pool bar… you know) safe from excessive splashing and wandering hands.
It’s just the right size for a wandering sidekick, too. You will not have a whole bunch of things in there, but the main thing is well secured. Unfortunately, my vacation photos were all ruined, but here is a photo of the Safy ride with me.
Here is a side profile shot so you can see how compact it is. The 60″ shoulder strap is adjustable, so it is easy to find a comfortable position as a shoulder bag or slung on the side. Even on my fat 5’10” 200 pound frame. You will however need to get your own Star Wars shirt. I won’t give up mine.
Safy also offers the cover in several cover options. Mine is black leather, which is also offered in beige. A black and white carbon fiber cover can be used, and Safy will offer additional leather and fabric patterns if they reach their Kickstarter goal. And if you REALLY want to get funky, they’ll print a custom exchangeable cover for you from any image or image you like (as long as it’s not copyrighted). Check out the kickstarter link below for more information.
I really enjoyed using the Safy Anti-theft travel bag. It is a simple and absolutely secure carrier for my travel essentials. Safy did a great job composing the design to focus on its mission without complicating overall usability. Style can be a subjective thing, but I think it works just as well as a men’s or women’s bag.
And if you want to participate in it, know that the Kickstarter has only a few days left! It closes on September 9 at 16:30 EDT, and there are still a good number of early bird promotions available. See the link below for more information.
